Transitional Registration Option for September 2026 PREP

The Law Society of British Columbia has arranged with the Centre for Professional Legal Education (CPLED) to allow candidates who have articling or clerkship arrangements already in place to secure a seat in the September 2026 session of CPLED’s Practice Readiness Education Program (PREP).

This transitional registration option is a one-time measure for BC for September 2026 PREP.

The purpose of the transitional registration option

CPLED registers candidates for PREP on a first-come, first-served basis. Online registration for September 2026 PREP will open on August 4 and close on August 20.

We understand the concerns expressed by BC employers and candidates about the need for planning certainty in Fall 2026 as we transition from the Law Society’s PLTC registration process to CPLED’s PREP registration process.

The Law Society and CPLED have worked closely to anticipate the number of BC registrations for September 2026, and CPLED expects to have enough places for all registrants. However, to address concerns about the planning impact of the transition from PLTC to PREP, CPLED has agreed to allow candidates who have articling or clerkship arrangements in place to secure a seat for September 2026 PREP through this option.

Eligibility for transitional registration

To secure a seat in September 2026 PREP through transitional registration, you must:

  1. be enrolled with the Law Society as an articled student; have submitted an articling application to Law Society by 4pm June 30, 2026; or have arranged to complete a BC judicial clerkship; and
  2. not have attempted PLTC, or be in the process of completing PLTC.

How the transitional registration option will work

Step 1: The Law Society and the Courts of British Columbia Judicial Clerk Program will each send CPLED a list of confirmed registrants for September 2026.

Articled students and articling applicants

On June 1, 2026, the Law Society will email eligible articled students and articling applicants inviting them to complete a Request for Transitional Registration in September 2026 PREP online form (“Transitional Registration Form”). If you submit your articling application between June 1-30, 2026, the Registration and Licensee Services Department will email you the Transitional Registration Form.

If interested, you must submit your Transitional Registration Form by June 30, 2026. The Law Society will send CPLED a list of confirmed registrants on July 2, 2026.

Please note that the Law Society will not be able to accept late Transitional Registration Request form submissions. If you miss the deadline, you may still register for the September 2026 PREP session during CPLED’s general registration period that opens on August 4, 2026.

Law clerks not enrolled as articled students

The Courts of British Columbia Judicial Clerk Program will send CPLED a list of confirmed registrant law clerks by June 30, 2026. Law clerks wanting to access the transitional registration option should contact the Judicial Clerk Program directly.

Step 2: CPLED will register the candidates on those lists.

CPLED will email transitional registrants with instructions on how to set up a CPLED user profile. You must create your profile to continue with this registration option. Candidates who do not complete this step will not secure a transitional registration spot.

CPLED will confirm your registration and provide directions for you (or your employer) to pay your tuition invoice. Further details about tuition payment options are on the CPLED website. Details on the Law Society’s subsidy reimbursement are posted on our Licensing page.

If you are not eligible for transitional registration

You will register during CPLED’s general registration period, which opens on August 4, 2026. While not guaranteed, CPLED anticipates having enough places for BC candidates.
