Congratulations to the 2026 secondary school essay winners

The Law Society congratulates essay contest winner Muhammed Goghari from Victoria High School in Victoria, BC and runner-up Beau Wong from Prince of Wales Secondary School in Vancouver, BC for their exceptional essays on the rule of law. Their essays are available on the Law Society’s website.

Participants in this year’s contest were asked to write an essay based on the following prompt:

"In a famous case in 1958 called Roncarelli v. Duplessis, the Supreme Court of Canada held that the rule of law was a fundamental postulate of the Canadian constitutional structure.  What do you think the Court meant by that, and give examples of how the Court’s judgment may still be relevant today."

The winner and runner-up were awarded $1,000 and $500 respectively and will be recognized for their achievements at the Benchers’ meeting on July 3.

The Law Society launched the annual essay contest in 2015 to enhance students’ knowledge of the importance of the rule of law and to encourage participation in civic life. The 2026-2027 essay contest and topic will be announced in the fall.
