Articling enrolment

To enrol as an articled student, you will need to prepare and submit an articling enrolment package.

STEP 1 - Gather and prepare documents

Documents that must be signed by you and your principal

Proof of academic qualification

  • Graduates of Canadian law schools – Arrange for a digital copy of your official transcript to be sent directly from your law school (contact address: registration@lsbc.org) or, if necessary, by post to Registration & Licensee Services Department, 845 Cambie Street, Vancouver, BC, V6B 4Z9. The transcript must show all grades and the degree conferred.

If your final transcript will not be available before your articling start date:

Graduate of a BC law school – Order your official transcript when it becomes available. In the meantime, the Law Society will confirm with your school that you have completed your degree requirements.

Graduate of a law school elsewhere in Canada –Provide a letter from your Dean confirming that you have successfully completed your degree requirements. Arrange for your official transcript to follow.

Other documents that may be required

  • Certificate of Standing – If you have been called and admitted in another jurisdiction, arrange for a digital Certificate of Standing to be produced within 30 days of the application date and sent from the issuing jurisdiction to the Law Society (registration@lsbc.org) or, if necessary, by post to Registration & Licensee Services Department, 845 Cambie Street, Vancouver, BC, V6B 4Z9.

STEP 2 - Pay the application fee for enrolment

Pay the application fee for enrolment of $288.75 using one of the Law Society’s accepted payment options. Consider attaching a copy (cheque payments) or screenshot (online payment or wire transfer) with your enrolment package for tracking purposes.

STEP 3 - Submit your articling enrolment package

We no longer accept applications with original paper documents.

Attach your electronic documents to an email to registration@lsbc.org titled [Your Full Name] - Articling Enrolment Application Package. Each document must be:

  • in PDF format, in colour, with pages in chronological order
  • named as follows: [Your Full Name] – [Simple Document Description]
  • for scanned documents, clearly legible

Deadline for submitting applications

You must submit your articling agreement at least 30 days before your proposed start date: Rule 2-54(1)(c). If your application is submitted less than 30 days in advance, we will adjust your start date to reflect the requirement.

While 30 days is the minimum requirement, we strongly encourage you to submit your articling enrolment package as early as possible. This allows for any delays that may be caused by missing or incomplete information, or time needed to complete the good character requirement ahead of your proposed articling start date.

Once you have been approved for enrolment as an articled student

Once your application is approved, you will receive an email confirmation containing your 6-digit LSBC Student ID and instructions to access the Member Portal. You will also be given a 5-digit Applicant ID to use during the Law Society tuition subsidy process.

If you need a Law Society student identification card, you will need to log into the Member Portal to download the card.
