In memoriam: the Honourable John J.L. Hunter, KC

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of the Honourable John J.L. Hunter, KC, a former President of the Law Society of BC and the Federation of Law Societies Canada. John made immense contributions to the legal profession in BC as both a lawyer and Justice of the Court of Appeal, and was well respected amongst the profession for his leadership and expertise.

John held degrees from Yale College, the London School of Economics and the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law. He served as law clerk for the Chief Justice of BC before being called to the Bar in 1977. In 2002, he co-founded Hunter Voith Litigation Counsel and subsequently Hunter Litigation Chambers, a firm nationally recognized for its pro bono work. 

As a lawyer, John enjoyed a busy trial and appellate practice for 40 years, focusing on commercial litigation and public law, appearing in leading constitutional, administrative and aboriginal matters. He regularly appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada, including his noted appointment as an amicus curiae in the 2014 Senate Reform Reference. Appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1994, he was recognized nationwide and beyond for his excellence in the practice of law. He was a Fellow of the International Society of Barristers and of the American College of Trial Lawyers and was the first Western Canadian to serve on the Board of Regents of the College. In 2014, he was honoured with a Law Society award for achievement in and contribution to the legal profession.

In 2017, John was appointed to the Court of Appeal of BC where he served as justice for BC and Yukon before retiring in 2024.
