The Canadian Centre for Professional Legal Education (CPLED) has set the Practice Readiness Education Program (PREP) tuition for the Fall 2026 Accelerated intake at $5,000 (before applicable taxes).
The Law Society subsidizes PREP tuition for BC applicants who:
- are approved to enroll as an articled student (or who have completed a clerkship and are approved for call and admission in BC); and
- have not attended or withdrawn from PLTC during their BC enrolment or received a subsidy from any other law society.
If a student has completed PREP in another jurisdiction prior to the September 2026 session, you will not be eligible to receive the LSBC tuition subsidy.
Subsidy amount
The Law Society subsidizes the tuition cost for PREP to eligible articled students.
For the September 2026 PREP intake, the PREP tuition fee is $5,000, before applicable taxes. Eligible articled students will receive a $2,400 tuition subsidy, resulting in a net tuition cost of $2,600, before applicable taxes. This is the same as the tuition cost for the PLTC course in 2026.
The tuition subsidy payment will be made directly to the articled student or the firm that paid the PREP tuition fee.
For the September 2026 PREP intake only, the subsidy amount will be based on whether GST on the PREP tuition cost is recoverable by the payor separately. If GST is not recoverable, we will add an amount equivalent to GST on the subsidy of $2,400.
We will announce the amount of the 2027 Law Society tuition subsidy in Fall 2026.
Receiving the subsidy
How the subsidy will be paid
Once a student has provided their Law Society details to PREP and their tuition is fully paid, we will arrange for the subsidy to be paid directly to the articled student or the firm that paid the PREP tuition fee either:
- by cheque to the mailing address we have on file for the payor. To request a different address, contact Registration and Licensee Services (registration@lsbc.org); or
- by EFT, if the firm is the payor and they are set up to receive EFT payments from the Law Society. Employers wanting to get set up for EFT will find directions in the Member Portal or may contact ap@lsbc.org. This is not yet available for individual students.
Where the student is the payor, the LSBC tuition subsidy will be considered a taxable benefit and we will require the relevant tax information before issuing the subsidy. A team member from the Finance Department will contact you for the relevant tax information.
Timeline
If tuition is paid in full at registration, we will issue the subsidy within three weeks after the PREP session registration closes.
If tuition is paid in instalments, we will issue the subsidy within three weeks after CPLED’s deadline for the final instalment.
An note for students on providing your Law Society Applicant ID to CPLED
When you set up your CPLED student profile, you will be asked for your articling/clerking details and law society member ID. The Law Society and CPLED use this information to confirm your enrolment and LSBC tuition subsidy eligibility.
When providing this information, be sure to use your LSBC Applicant ID. The 5-digit LSBC Applicant ID is different from your 6-digit LSBC Student ID. You can find your Applicant ID in our email confirming receipt of your application (or of your application for call and admission, if clerking) and in your LSBC Member Portal.
Registering and paying for PREP
It is now possible to register and complete PREP before being enrolled with the Law Society. In this situation, a student will become eligible to receive the subsidy once they are:
- enrolled as an articled student; or
- approved for call and admission after a clerkship.
